On the Ground in Ruhiira

Situated in the Isingiro District of southwestern Uganda, the Ruhiira Cluster has been part of the Millennium Villages Project (MVP) since mid-2006.

Despite Uganda being the 2nd largest banana producer in the world - and the Isingiro District the largest producer in Uganda - the people were mired in a crushing poverty trap.

Their main issues? Malnutrition - as a result of low food production and crop diversity. Access to clean water. Lack of medical personnel and ill-equipped health care facilities. Poor or non-existent roads. Inadequate schools and low school enrollment.

In just 3 years the holistic interventions supported by Millennium Promise and led by the community itself are lifting these villages out of extreme poverty.

On the Drawing Board:
Piped Water!

The MVP team is working with local government to develop a piped water system to bring water closer to households and institutions. Construction will begin soon.
